One thing that I have learned over time is that challenges help improve your skills. As humans, we love a challenge; we love stretching our limits. Hikers strive for longer, higher hikes. Runners push themselves to reach marathon distances. Similarly, artists can benefit immensely from art challenges. These challenges are not only excellent for honing skills but also for establishing lasting creative habits.
A friend of mine once did a painting a day, and I took on a 100-day comic challenge. Both of these experiences significantly impacted our artistic journeys. Challenges like these provide structure and motivation, making it easier to create consistently and see tangible progress.
Now, I find myself in need of a new challenge to help me regain my rusty art habits. Creating art regularly helps improve your skills and makes you a better artist. After completing my 365-daily drawing challenge many years ago, I used some of those drawings to successfully apply to art school. That challenge pushed me to explore new techniques and ideas that I might not have otherwise considered.
I’m feeling the itch again to challenge myself, to find something new that will keep me learning and growing. Developing a regular art habit isn't just about becoming a better artist; it’s also about maintaining mental health. Engaging in creative activities can be incredibly therapeutic, providing a sense of accomplishment and a positive outlet for stress.
Finding Your Next Challenge
If you’re considering taking on an art challenge yourself, here are a few ideas to get you started:
Daily Sketching: Commit to drawing something every day, no matter how small.
Themed Months: Participate in events like Inktober, where you create ink drawings based on daily prompts throughout October.
30-Day Challenges: Focus on a specific medium or subject for 30 days, such as watercolor landscapes or portrait studies.
Collaborative Projects: Team up with other artists to create a collaborative piece or series, pushing each other to stay motivated.
Remember, the goal of an art challenge is not just to complete it but to enjoy the process and grow as an artist. So, find a challenge that excites you and dive in.
