February can be the coldest month of the year here in Alberta. Right now we are in the throes of a deep freeze that causes us to bundle up in so many layers that body image means nothing. We are all just giant piles of fabric hoping that any exposed bit of skin doesn’t get “nipped”.
There is something about being in the cold together. We hardy Canadians who live in the north and complain all winter about how we wish we lived somewhere warm. But we don’t leave. Maybe it’s because we are stubborn. Maybe it’s a bet we made with Mother Nature, that she can’t make us leave no matter how hard she tries. Or maybe there is a community in suffering.
There is something incredible about living in a place that is actively trying to kill you. It is inspiring in a lot of ways. It is a testament to the human spirit that we choose to live in this wild winter land.
That being said, and early spring wouldn’t be so bad.
